Belly Button Piercing
The classic navel piercing — a curved bar that catches the light.
Belly button piercing jewellery: curved bars, dangles and gem-set designs for the navel. A belly piercing takes time to heal, so the material matters, G23 titanium to start, gold to shine once settled. Find the belly bar that moves with you. New to navel sizing? Our gauge and size guide helps you choose.
What is a belly button piercing
A belly button (navel) piercing goes through the fold of skin just above the navel, with the jewellery resting in the hollow. The standard piece is a curved barbell — the top ball sits above, the larger charm hangs just inside the navel. It is one of the most popular body piercings and suits almost everyone.
Navel jewellery: curved bars, dangles and floating
- Curved barbell (banana bar) — the classic; a gem on top, a larger stone below.
- Dangly charms — a bar with a drop that moves and catches the light, for a healed navel.
- Floating / reverse — the decorative end sits on top and the plain ball tucks inside, for a minimal look.
The usual gauge is 14G. See the types of piercing jewellery.
Titanium or gold for a navel
- Implant-grade titanium (G23) — nickel-free and hypoallergenic, strongly recommended while it heals.
- Gold finish — warm gold PVD over titanium for a healed navel, still nickel-free.

Healing — and avoiding rejection
A navel heals in about 6 to 12 months. Because it is a shallow surface-style piercing, it is more prone to migration and rejection than ear piercings — the body slowly pushes shallow jewellery out. You lower the risk with correct, deep-enough placement, a lightweight nickel-free bar, and not changing to a heavy dangly piece too early. Watch for the jewellery sitting closer to the surface or the skin thinning over it, and see your piercer if you notice it. Full routine in our aftercare guide.
Does a belly button piercing hurt?
It is soft skin, not cartilage, so it is a quick, sharp pinch — most people rate it 3 to 4 out of 10 and find it easier than they expected. High-waisted clothing and seatbelts can rub it while it heals, so dress around it for the first months.
