Septum Piercing

The centre of the nose — bold worn down, invisible flipped up.

Septum piercing jewellery for the centre of the nose. Clickers, horseshoe rings and seamless hoops, in nickel-free certified material. Flip it up to hide it or wear it proud, the septum is one of the most flexible piercings to style. Shop it in titanium or gold; compare a clicker and a horseshoe, or add a nose piece.

What a septum piercing really is

A septum piercing passes through the soft tissue just below the cartilage wall that divides the nostrils — the "sweet spot". Placed well, it goes through skin rather than hard cartilage, which is why it is less painful than people expect and heals relatively quickly. It is one of the few piercings you can make fully invisible by flipping the jewellery up inside the nose.

Septum jewellery: clickers, horseshoes and rings

Almost any ring-style piece fits a septum:

  • Clickers — hinged rings that close with one click, the easiest and most popular choice; decorative fronts sit neatly under the nose.
  • Horseshoe (circular barbell) — an open ring with two balls, the classic flip-up piece you can hide at work.
  • Seamless rings & pinchers — a plain, continuous look for everyday wear.

A 16G (1.2 mm) is the usual gauge. See the types of piercing jewellery.

Titanium or gold for a septum

  • Implant-grade titanium (G23) — nickel-free and hypoallergenic, the right choice while it heals.
  • Gold finish — a warm tone for a healed septum; PVD gold over a titanium base, so still nickel-free.

Hiding a septum: the flip-up trick

With a horseshoe or a retainer, the jewellery flips up inside the nostrils and disappears — handy for work or family. A faux (clip-on) septum gives the same look with no piercing at all. Once healed, switching between a visible clicker and a hidden retainer takes seconds.

Healing a septum piercing

A septum usually heals in 2 to 4 months. Expect some tenderness and a little swelling in the first days. Clean twice a day with sterile saline, avoid flipping or turning it early, and leave the first jewellery in until it is settled — full routine in our aftercare guide.

Does a septum piercing hurt?

Through the sweet spot it is a brief, intense pinch and your eyes may water — most people rate it 3 to 5 out of 10 and find it easier than a cartilage piercing. It is a popular first visible piercing for men and women alike.

How long does a septum piercing take to heal?
Usually 2 to 4 months when placed in the soft sweet spot. It heals faster than cartilage piercings, but keep cleaning it with saline and leave the first jewellery in until it feels fully settled.
Can you hide a septum piercing?
Yes. A horseshoe ring or a retainer flips up inside the nostrils and becomes invisible, which makes the septum one of the easiest piercings to hide for work. A faux septum gives the look without any piercing.
Does a septum piercing hurt?
Through the sweet spot it is a quick, intense pinch and your eyes often water, but it is over fast — most people rate it 3 to 5 out of 10. If it is placed too high through cartilage it hurts more, so choose an experienced piercer.
What jewellery is best for a new septum?
A 16G clicker or horseshoe in implant-grade titanium. Titanium is nickel-free for safe healing, and a horseshoe lets you flip the jewellery up to hide it while it settles.
Will a septum piercing close up if I take it out?
Once fully healed, a septum can stay open for a while if you leave it empty, but it can also shrink or close — everyone is different. If you want the option to go without jewellery, a clear retainer keeps the channel open discreetly.
