Rook Piercing

The cartilage ridge above the daith — worn with a curved bar or small hoop.

The rook piercing sits on the fold of cartilage above the daith, in the upper ear. It suits a curved barbell or a small ring and pairs beautifully in a curated ear. At Aurea every rook piece is made in nickel-free, hypoallergenic material — titanium for safe healing, gold for a warm finish. It sits just above the daith and pairs with a helix.

What is a rook piercing

A rook piercing passes through the fold of cartilage in the upper inner ear, the ridge that sits just above the daith. Only the two ends of the jewellery show — a small ball above and below the ridge — which gives it a neat, sculpted look and makes it a favourite in a layered ear.

Rook jewellery: curved barbells and rings

  • Curved barbell — the standard; it follows the ridge and shows a gem or ball at each end.
  • Seamless rings & small hoops — a ring that wraps the ridge, once healed, for a bolder look.
  • Shaped tops — hearts, flowers or gems to personalise the visible ends.

A snug diameter sits best because the fold is tight. See the types of piercing jewellery.

Titanium or gold for a rook

Rook, snug and anti-helix: close neighbours

The rook sits among a cluster of inner-ear cartilage piercings that are easy to confuse. The snug (anti-helix) runs along the inner ridge lower down and is one of the most demanding to heal; the rook is the fold above the daith. Not every ear has a rook pronounced enough to pierce — a good piercer will check your anatomy first.

Healing a rook piercing

A thick inner fold, the rook heals slowly — usually 6 to 12 months. It is tucked away, so avoid sleeping on it, keep headphones clear, and flush it with sterile saline twice a day. Leave the first barbell in until it is fully healed. Full routine in our aftercare guide.

Does a rook piercing hurt?

It passes through a thick double layer of cartilage, so it is one of the firmer ear piercings — most people rate it 5 to 7 out of 10, a deep pressure more than a sharp sting. It is quick, and the ache usually eases within a day or two.

How long does a rook piercing take to heal?
As a thick inner cartilage fold, usually 6 to 12 months. Keep the first curved barbell in, flush it with saline twice a day, and avoid sleeping on it — pressure is the main cause of irritation.
Does a rook piercing hurt?
It passes through a thick double layer of cartilage, so it is firmer than most ear piercings — most people rate it 5 to 7 out of 10. It feels like deep pressure, it is quick, and it eases within a day or two.
Can everyone get a rook piercing?
No — it depends on your anatomy. The ridge above the daith needs to be pronounced enough to hold the jewellery. A good piercer will check your ear first and tell you honestly if a rook will sit well.
What jewellery suits a rook?
A snug curved barbell in implant-grade titanium while it heals — it follows the fold and shows a gem at each end. Once healed you can switch to a small ring. Keep the diameter tight so it sits neatly in the ridge.
