Description

This opal flat back stud sets a small, domed cabochon of lab-created opal in fine prongs, on a smooth titanium post. Turn your head and the stone shifts colour: a soft play of fire that stays subtle enough for every day. Wear it as an opal nose stud in the nostril, or higher up in a tragus, helix, conch or flat.

The opal is synthetic, created in a laboratory, not mined, and we would rather say so plainly. Underneath, the post is cut from ASTM F136 implant-grade titanium (G23), nickel-free and gentle on sensitive skin, with a polished silver tone that lets the opal do the talking. Prefer a warmer setting? See the gold opal flat back stud.

As an opal labret, it is built for comfort: a flat disc rests against the inside of your nostril or the back of your ear, with no point to scratch and nothing to catch on a pillow. The opal top screws into the post from the front (internally threaded), so the thread never passes through the piercing.

Choosing your top size and post length

The post is 16G (1.2 mm) and comes in 6 or 8 mm. The top comes in 3, 4 or 5 mm: 3 mm is a discreet dot for a nostril, 4 mm is the all-rounder, and 5 mm shows off the fire on a tragus or flat. A 6 mm post suits most nostrils and thin cartilage; 8 mm gives more room for thicker cartilage. Your first jewellery is fitted by your piercer, so keep the gauge they chose.

White or purple opal?

White opal flashes iridescent white and blue, soft and luminous on any skin tone. Purple opal glows with purple-pink fire, a little bolder. Would you rather have a classic sparkle? Our titanium labret takes crystal tops.

Frequently asked questions about the titanium opal stud

  • Is it a real opal? It is a synthetic opal, created in a laboratory. It has the play of colour opal is known for, but it is not a natural, mined stone.
  • Can I wear it in my nose? Yes. It is a 16G nose stud with a flat back, comfortable inside the nostril. Check with your piercer that 16G matches your piercing.
  • Can I wear it while my piercing heals? Your piercer fits your first jewellery. Once they say you can change it, this titanium stud is a gentle choice for sensitive skin.

Opal fire, kind to sensitive skin.

Putting in your flat back

Three moves and it's in. The top screws on at the front — the flat disc stays put behind.

1

Disc behind

Place the flat disc behind the piercing, flat against the skin.

2

Post through

Guide the post through the hole, to the front.

3

Screw the top

Screw the top onto the post from the front (internal thread). Snug, not forced.

Once in, it doesn't spin or snag — you can sleep in it. On a fresh piercing, have your piercer fit it.

Which top size should I choose?
3 mm is discreet for a nostril, 4 mm suits most placements, and 5 mm makes a statement on a tragus or flat.
Which post length do I need?
6 mm fits most nostrils and thin cartilage. Choose 8 mm for thicker cartilage, such as a tragus or conch.
Does the opal change colour?
It shows a play of colour as the light moves: white-blue fire on the White opal, purple-pink fire on the Purple.
How do I change the top?
Hold the flat back still and unscrew the top from the front. It is internally threaded, so no thread passes through the piercing.
